Commenting on the publication of proposals by the UK Government to charge utility companies in England for digging up roads during peak traffic hours, Byron Davies AM, Shadow Minister for Transport, said:
“In Wales we are more familiar than most with the frustration of seemingly endless traffic jams caused by roadworks.
“Traffic congestion costs the Welsh economy hundreds of millions of pounds every year as well as causing inconvenience and unnecessary stress to commuters, small businesses and tourists.
“We welcome the proposals announced for England to charge a lane rental fee to utility companies, which would minimise disruption by encouraging companies to carry out works outside peak traffic hours or even overnight.
“We now look to the Welsh Labour Government to consider adopting these proposals in Wales to reduce congestion and its damaging consequences for the nation’s economy.”
