A Riot in Bangor? Or One Sandwich Short of a Picnic?

On Tuesday, David Glyn Jones (21), of Bangor was jailed for four months after posting an invitation to start a riot which appeared on Facebook for less than 20 minutes.

Caernarfon magistrates heard that David Glyn Jones told his on-line friends: “Let’s start Bangor riots”.

The court were told Jones typed:

“I don’t see why everyone’s complaining about the rioters.

“Given the chance I’d love to smash up a police car, wouldn’t you?”

Jones later told police it was “a moment of stupidity” which he regretted and apologised for his behaviour via his solicitor.

OK, so there we have it. A silly young man “bigging it up” to his fiends on-line? It seems to us that the sentence may have been a little harsh if not excessive. The national media diligently reported the case but seems to have missed  the main cause of concern in the area.

If there is to be a riot in Bangor, it looks like it will be over sandwiches. Not, not the choice of fillings or the price, but the decision by the WRVS tea bar and shop for workers and patients at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor to source their sanwiches from Ginsters instead of local firm Menai Deli who have supplied and supported the hospital for many years.

Wyn Williams of Menai Deli said staff are “devastated” and six will lose their jobs, with only four remaining. A petition is being started among supporters.

Even the Charity Commission is looking into the matter and local MP Albert Owen has said the decision was a “slap in the face” for local volunteers.”
