GCSE students across Flintshire will be in the mood to celebrate today, as excellent public examination results are again being reported in the county’s schools.
The total percentage of GCSE (A*-G) passes for Wales this year is 98.7%, which is the same as last year. With the results in from the Welsh Examining Board (WJEC), the pass rate for students in Flintshire stands at 99.4%, equaling the record results at this stage in 2010.
Higher Grade (A* – C) passes across Flintshire stand at 72.0% of all full course examinations taken with the Welsh Board, a significant increase of 2.1% when compared to 69.8% of entries at this stage last year. Across Wales a modest 0.1% improvement has taken the A*-C pass rate on all courses to 66.5%.
The proportion of A and A* grades achieved by Flintshire students in 2010 is 18.6%, up 1.2% on the 2010 figure. Across Wales as a whole this figure is up 0.4% at 19.5%.
The total number of subject entries by Flintshire students with the Welsh Board in the summer exams is slightly down on last year, reflecting a decrease across Wales, lower overall numbers of students and entries for courses other than GCSE. Whilst these are the bulk of subject entries, those made with examining boards in England can affect the pass rate across the county.
Additionally, some Flintshire students now take examinations early in the year rather than always in the summer period. Results in Flintshire should be further improved when those candidates who took examinations early are added to results from the summer period alone.
Director of Lifelong Learning, Ian Budd, said:
“The Council is pleased to offer its congratulations to the students, teachers, parents and carers of Flintshire for these excellent GCSE results. They are a result of the commitment and hard work of our students. Our young people can move forward with confidence into Further Education in Flintshire. The Council warmly congratulates all our students upon their success”.
Executive Member for Lifelong Learning, Councillor Nigel Steele-Mortimer, added:
“I congratulate the students on their results this year. The results demonstrate the hard work of pupils and teaching staff in Flintshire schools.”
