Sport Flintshire is launching its first ever Dragon Sport Summer Festival to celebrate the fact that more than 3,000 children have tried out Dragon Sports this summer holiday.
An exciting menu of Dragon Sport activities have been served up for seven to 13 year olds all summer long at Mold, Buckley, Holywell, Flint and Connahs’ Quay Leisure Centres.
To celebrate the success of this year’s programme, Sport Flintshire’s first Summer Sport festival takes place on Wednesday 31 August at Mold Leisure Centre.
As a reward for those children who have attended the most sport sessions around 70 children will be bussed in, from all corners of the county, to participate in their favourite Dragon Sport activities at the festival.
Summer activities, some of which will feature at the festival, have included:
- Traditional Sports: Hockey, Football, Tennis, Basketball, Tri Golf, Netball, Tag Rugby, Kwik Cricket, Athletics & Badminton.
- Wheeled Sports: BMX, Scooters, Roller Blading, Skateboarding.
- Dance: Cheerleading, Street Dance, Zumba.
- Water Sports: Water Walkerz, Jet Ski’s, Sea Scooters, Water Polo, Snorkelling.
- Additional Sports: Dodgeball, Street Skills, Kidz Fit (Fitness and play for ‘hard to reach’ children)
Steve Thomas, Holiday Club Coordinator, said: ‘‘The programme has had a dramatic impact on sports participation in Flintshire this summer by encouraging over 3,000 children to become involved in a variety of organised sporting activities.
“The summer programme has been designed to offer seven to 13-year-olds fun, safe and inclusive sporting opportunities and to involve children who lack such opportunities outside of school. It has helped broaden the children’s sporting interests by introducing them to coaching, skill development and appropriate competition whilst remaining committed to developing fair play principles.”
Dragon Sport is a Sport Wales initiative, funded by the National Lottery, delivered locally by Sport Flintshire. The scheme broadens the sporting interests of children who already take part in sport and involves children who currently lack such opportunities outside of their school PE lessons.
Sport Wales Regional Manager, Graham Williams, said: “Dragon sport is already being delivered at 95% of primary schools in North Wales, including all 68 in Flintshire, during term time. It’s great to see Sport Flintshire extending the programme into school holidays to keep youngsters in Flintshire active over the summer months.
“The popularity of the summer scheme speaks volumes, with not just 100s but 1000s of youngsters taking part. These are exactly the sort of opportunities that we want to see replicated across North Wales, and the rest of the country, to achieve our shared ambition of getting every child hooked on sport for life.”
