Cycling festival makes the most of Gower beauty spots

A week of cycling activities is set to take place in Swansea as part of the Gower Cycling Festival.

The festival is now in its second year and Swansea Council is supporting festival organisers Wheelrights who have put together 18 different cycling events between September 10 and September 17.

Everything from gentle fun family rides along Mumbles to an epic 60-mile trek through the Swansea Valleys to Coelbren is included.

Rob Wachowski, Swansea Council’s Walking and Cycling Officer, said: “Swansea is perfect for cycling. We have a real diverse city with lots to see and there’s no better way to view the excellent scenery we have than on a bike. The festival is the perfect way for people to be introduced to the beauty of Gower.

“We want everyone to come and take part and we’ve made sure there are events to cover all ages and all skill levels.

“Cycling should be about having fun as well as keeping fit and healthy. All the events will provide riders with lots of fun during the festival.”

In recent years, international cycling events have been held in Swansea, helping the city to make its mark as an international venue for cycle-related activities. The city was the venue for the UK leg of the Footbike Eurocup for a number of years. Elite cyclists also raced through the city as part of the Tour of Britain.

Rob said: “Swansea has been the venue for lots of cycling events during the last few years. We have a great infrastructure for cycling and there is continuing progress to create more cycle-friendly roads and cycle tracks in partnership with local cycling groups.”
