Common sense urged over Local Development Plan

Speaking ahead of a key meeting this week, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called for a common sense approach to Conwy County Borough Council’s Local Development Plan.

On Thursday 8th September, there will be a special meeting at Conwy County Borough Council to discuss the draft Local Development Plan. Under current proposals, 870 new homes could be built in the Abergele area.

Darren Millar said, ‘It is clear that if the current proposals for a further 870 new homes in Abergele go ahead then this would be a disaster for our area. Local services will be completely over-stretched and a huge strain will be put on infrastructure such as already congested roads, health facilities and local schools.

‘The housing proposals were determined at the height of the property boom. They do not reflect the reality of local need and must be looked at again.

Denbighshire County Council has already given the green light to up to 2,000 new homes in nearby Bodelwyddan, so it is incredibly important that Conwy County Borough Council looks at the knock on effect in Abergele.

‘Many residents in Bodelwyddan use services such as schools and medical facilities in Abergele and this cannot be ignored by planning officers when they look at proposals for new housing in the Conwy Local Development Plan.

‘We need an urgent re-think on these unsustainable plans.’
