Clare makes a run for Mum

A Coleg Gwent Lecturer is preparing to take on the Cardiff Half Marathon for the second year in a row in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, who have helped her Mum during treatment for cancer.

Clare Johnson ran her first ever race two years ago, and has since raised over £300 running for different charities. The Coleg Gwent IT Lecturer recently completed the Cardiff 10k to prepare for October’s Lloyds TSB Cardiff Half Marathon and achieved a personal best of 53 minutes 16 seconds.

The race was a family affair as Clare’s husband and three children joined her for a 2k fun run, part of the 10k event. “We had an absolutely brilliant day,” said Clare, who works at Coleg Gwent’s Learn-IT Centre in Cwmbran. “I felt enormously proud of them all as it’s the first race any of them have ever run, and I was really pleased with my 10k personal best.”

Clare is now running about 20 miles a week to train for the half marathon on Sunday 16 October, and aims to complete it in two hours.

This year, Clare’s fundraising for the half marathon is especially close to her heart: “I’ve chosen Macmillan because of my Mum’s on-going battle with ovarian cancer.  She’s just finished her second course of chemo and is currently doing very well, and she has found Macmillan to be a great support to her.

“I’d love to raise around £200 for Macmillan this year, especially because of my Mum’s connection. It would be great if anyone can sponsor me, no matter how small the amount.”
