Glyn Davies, Montgomeryshire’s Conservative MP met with teachers and pupils from Germany, Hungary, Italy, N Ireland, Romania, Spain and Turkey at Ysgol Pennant in Penybontfawr today. The group had travelled to Wales as part of a British Council managed European Commission cultural exchange project.
Ysgol Pennant will be working with schools in the other participating countries on a project entitled ‘Celtic Roots and Roman Routes. The purpose of the project is to develop knowledge and understanding of different European cultures and languages.
Commenting on the visit, Glyn Davies said;
“Throughout the last 100 years, young people from Montgomeryshire have left for economic reasons to live all over the world. This has made Wales a more internationally aware nation, with greater tolerance of peoples with different cultures. This British Council managed project will bring young people from many different countries together, developing friendship and goodwill amongst them. I am very pleased that a Montgomeryshire School is linked into this partnership.”
Culture and the Welsh Language are in part what makes Wales distinctive and special. We are proud of our culture, as other nations are proud of theirs. The pupils of Ysgol Pennant are putting on display their talent through song, dance and language, spreading knowledge of our small nation across Europe. I feel proud of them.
“There is no doubt that through improved knowledge and understanding of each others distinctive cultures and languages, the peoples of Europe know and understand each other better. And its through knowledge and understanding that friendship and peace are promoted”
