The ‘Notes from a City’ exhibition will officially open at the Old Library, the Hayes next Monday (December 7) and run until December 23.
All photographs featured in the exhibition are a result of a unique photography competition run by Cardiff Council back in September.
The ‘Notes from a City’ competition asked homeless people to capture their lives on film and allowed participants 24 hours to take photos on the theme of change. Cameras were distributed throughout Cardiff by hostel staff and key workers in the city.
More than 1,000 photographs were received and in September judges, Hannah Firth, Head of Visual Arts, Chapter Arts; Lisa Edgar, Head of Education, Ffotogallery and Mike Friel, Operational Manager, Cardiff Council selected the photographs to be displayed in the exhibition.
The top three images chosen were taken by Rebecca Giles (1st), John Arthur (2nd) and Martin Brettle (3rd). All three have won the opportunity to spend a day with a professional photographer, who will help them develop their skills further, plus a digital camera and a framed copy of their photograph.
Executive Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, Cllr Judith Woodman, said:
“The Notes from a City exhibition is a platform for homeless people to raise awareness for the issues they face and is an opportunity to show society that homeless people have the same thoughts, feeling and skills as those who are lucky enough to have a home.
“The homeless community of Cardiff should be very proud of the work they have produced and I would encourage everyone to go along and see the exhibition.
“I hope Rebecca, John and Martin enjoy learning more about photography and I hope that it will enable them to progress their skills further.”
