Commenting on the statement from the Vice-Chancellors of the St David’s Day Group of universities regarding the future of the University of Wales, Angela Burns AM, Shadow Minister for Education, said:
“This has been a shocking episode in Welsh higher education, which has discredited a once prestigious and respected international brand.
“Graduates, students and staff of the University of Wales will be upset and angry that leadership failings, ineffective scrutiny and a lack of robust processes mean it is now impossible for this once cherished institution to continue in its present form.
“The individuals throughout the organisation, whose inaction has brought this institution to its knees, must be held to account.
“To protect the reputation of and pride in Wales’ higher education sector, the University of Wales can no longer claim to represent the universities of Wales and needs a fresh brand to draw a line under its now tarnished history.”
