Coleg Gwent has appointed a new Chair to their Corporation this week – Angela Lloyd. The appointment follows the retirement of Dr Keith Denison who served on the governing body since 2001, including five years as Chair, and is moving on to pastures new in Lincolnshire.
In the three years Angela has been a business member of the Corporation she has made a significant contribution as Chair of the Audit and Appeals Committees. With effect from August 2011 she has moved to Chair of the Resources Committee and also serves on the Curriculum & Quality Committee.
During her career, prior to her retirement in 2010, Angela held various positions, including Financial Controller, Management Accountant and IT Consultant. Angela also served in the RAF and continues to support the HM Armed Forces through her membership of the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association in Wales.
Angela officially took up her new role on Tuesday 11 October and is keen to continue the positive impact Keith has established: “Keith has undertaken all of his Corporation roles with commitment, integrity and enthusiasm. He has acted with the welfare of students at the forefront of his mind, whilst working to develop an outstanding College.
“I have taken up my new role in the most exciting, and also challenging, of times. As Chair, I believe that in the changing face of education in Wales, there are great opportunities for Coleg Gwent.
“Whilst we continue to develop an outstanding institution in terms of the quality and breadth of provision which we deliver, we also have the welfare and pastoral care of our students at the forefront of our minds as we continue to broaden our student support.
“Coleg Gwent has a unique opportunity to serve and enhance the prospects of people in Blaenau Gwent through our participation in UHOVI and the opening of the Learning Zone in 2012. Through such collaborative partnerships across south Wales, identifying growth opportunities and the use of innovative technologies, we will continue to develop an outstanding College.
“My focus as Chair will be to work with my fellow members of the Corporation, the Principal and senior management team to deliver a College whose strategic mission and direction meets the demands of the 21st Century.”
Principal Jim Bennett paid tribute to Dr Denison’s invaluable contribution to Coleg Gwent whilst welcoming Angela as Chair: “Keith’s deep and broad knowledge of education issues, along with his strong principles and fine judgement, have been most helpful to me since being appointed almost 18 months ago. Thousands of students have benefited from Keith’s commitment throughout his service at the College and I look forward to building on this with Angela in the future.”
