A group of parents and children attended a private screening this week (Wednesday) of the popular film UP thanks to the Apollo Cinema and Action for Children.
The screening was a prize donated by Neath Port Talbot Bookstart for a rhyme writing competition which was hosted by the Council’s library service on National Bookstart Day.
Every child in the UK is given a gift from Bookstart of free books at around eight months and then again at 18-24 months. Parents and carers are given guidance to help children to become interested in reading through a range of fun activities.
Bookstart Bear, the scheme’s mascot, came along to the group and paid a surprise visit.
This year’s rhyme writing competition was a big success and parents produced some first class verses which are now being put together into a booklet for each child.
The children were given books, nursery rhymes booklets and Bookstart Day stickers and the overall winner received a £10 book voucher.
Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “We are grateful for the support of the Apollo Cinema and Action for Children for Neath Port Talbot Bookstart.
“We hope that our encouragement will help parents recognise the importance of listening, learning and reading with their children from an early age.”
“I am delighted to support this event which brings together parents, carers and the library service in an initiative designed to help young children with their reading”.
