Call into Cardiff Castle this Hallowe’en for some spooky tours and tales as we delve deeper into some mysterious happenings on Saturday and Sunday 29 – 30 October from 2pm – 6pm, (last admission 5pm).
With Hallowe’en themed arts and crafts activities too, the Castle is a great setting for families to come along and enjoy some ghostly goings-on! Come along in costume, but don’t forget to dress suitably for outdoors too.
For adults and older children, there are special tours of the Castle’s famous Clock Tower, said to be one of the most mysterious parts of the Castle. It was here, within the Summer Smoking Room, at the top of the Clock Tower, that the 3rd Marquess of Bute held séances and tried to communicate with the ‘unseen’.
Lord Bute was also fascinated by the idea of ghosts and was a member of the Society for Psychical Research. He investigated the paranormal wherever he could and some say, that to this day, there are some unexplained happenings in the Clock Tower.
There are 121 steps to reach the top of the Clock Tower. It is worth the effort; the walls, floor and ceiling are ablaze with colourful decoration and it is a rare opportunity to see the magnificent rooms within the Clock Tower that is such a familiar landmark in the city.
For anyone wanting to hear more on the Ghost Stories of Cardiff Castle, there is a special lecture by Matthew Williams on Hallowe’en night, Monday 31 October at 6pm, is a must. Strange sightings and unexplained happenings associated with the Castle and the families who lived and died here are examined forensically by the Curator.
