Cardiff Students Peer Into Westminster with Special Visitor

Students from a Cardiff secondary school have been given an exclusive insight into the work and role of the House of Lords.

Lord Michael German paid a visit to Radyr Comprehensive School on Friday, November 4 to meet with young people from the sixth form and discuss his position in the Lords.

Former Deputy First Minister at the Welsh Assembly, Lord German met with students studying at the Welsh Baccalaureate department at Radyr to chat with them about the politics dimension of the qualification and how young people can be more involved in the political and parliamentary process.

There was also the opportunity for the young people to question Lord German on various aspects of the parliamentary process and life at Westminster generally.

The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s “Peers in Schools” programme, which has been running across the UK since 2007 and has so far involved around 30,000 young people.  The programme arranges for members of the House of Lords to visit schools and colleges across the country to give talks in support of the citizenship curriculum.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “I’m sure the students of Radyr Comprehensive School will have found Lord German’s visit extremely beneficial in giving them an insight into how the House of Lords works and the influence it has on our lives.

“This was a great chance for those who met Lord German to ask questions and find out more about politics. It’s so important that young people are engaged in the democratic process as they are the voters of the future so what better way to make sure they have an interest in the system than by meeting someone who is part of that process.”
