Driving up standards in Denbighshire’s education

Denbighshire continues to see vast improvements in education results across the county.

Figures issued by the Welsh Government  for 2010/11show that Denbighshire was ranked 5th of all 22 Welsh counties when it came to the number of GCSE pupils achieving Level 2 (the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C).

The Council was also ranked 8th for the number of pupils attaining Level 2+ (which includes a GCSE grades A*-C in English or Welsh first language and mathematics).

This is a very considerable improvement on previous years. The figures for school attendance and exclusions are also positive.

At A Level, the county’s pupils ranked 11th when it came to the number of pupils achieving Level 3 threshold (equivalent to 2 A Levels at grades A-E)

Councillor Eryl Williams, Cabinet Lead Member for Modernising Education, said:

“These results reflect the tremendous amount of work going on in the county to drive up standards in education and are better than the Welsh national average. These figures are official confirmation of our success in the GCSE and A Level examinations last summer.

“Everyone involved is to be congratulated and we will continue to strive for even higher attainment in standards of education in the future.”
