A new public work of art is the latest development in a string of projects carried out to improve the visual image of Rhuddlan.
Artist Mike Owens from Afonwen was commissioned to design and manufacture a sculpture that would form a gateway feature up into the historic town . Made out of solid oak you will now be greeted into the town by three life size knights who are protecting the town and the castle. As they have been particularly busy they are sitting down on a bench in the rose beds keeping a close eye of passers by!!
Other works include:
- Grass verge clearance along Tan yr Eglwys
- Reinstatement of a new stone wall feature which included a new stone planter and bench
- Drainage works, new kerbing and resurfacing work
- Planting of spring blubs along Tan yr Eglwys
These projects were carried out to address problems with overgrown areas near the town’s historic bridge, drainage issues and issues with the grass verges.
Funding for these works were made available by the Welsh Government (through Strategic Regeneration Area funds), Cadwyn Clwyd, Denbighshire Highways and Regeneration, Rhuddlan Town Council and Tidy Towns.
Project Manager Michelle Rendell from Denbighshire County Council said: “The westerly approach to the town is being developed by the private sector. Recent developments include a new hotel and fast food restaurant.
“The town’s streetscape has received Welsh Government and European funding in the past for public realm improvements and we are extremely fortunate that the town centre is generally vibrant and buckled the trend during the recent recession with fewer empty premises”.
Councillor J T Jones, Mayor of Rhuddlan: “We are delighted that Tan Y Eglwys and the corner of Station Road has had a bit of a makeover.
“As a historic town located in a prominent position, it is vitally important that we make the town look welcoming for visitors and residents alike. The projects have really made a difference and we are delighted with the results.
