A Vale of Glamorgan Council scheme for the proposed one-way system and associated on street car parking for the centre of Penarth has been finalised.
Set to include a lane specifically for cyclists to travel in both directions along Arcot Street, the scheme drawn up by the council was approved in principle by its Planning Committee in September. The final report was presented to the committee on Thursday, December 3, on the same day members visit the site.
In September, the committee, under the chairmanship of Cllr Jeffery James, asked for a further report dealing with final details and assurances on the use of existing materials. Cllr James, who is also the cabinet member for planning and transportation, said it was critical the committee had further information on the scheme before work could progress.
Cllr James said this week: “The scheme is in an important town centre location and, whilst the provision of traffic management measures and on street car parking will, without doubt, assist residents, traders and visitors, it was important the committee was made fully aware of the finishes and materials to be used.
“I am also delighted that, through careful design work, the scheme now includes a dedicated lane on Arcot Street for use by cyclists. This is the first of its kind in the Vale and demonstrates our commitment to making adequate and safe provision for cyclists in the Vale.”
Cllr James, who chairs a group established to explore potential links to the new Pont y Werin Bridge at Penarth Marina, continued: “I am aware of the demand for cycling provision within the Penarth area, and this development demonstrates my commitment in ensuring, wherever possible, that the demand can be met.”
The move to include a specific ‘contra flow’ cycle lane has been met with support from local ward member Cllr Sophie Williams, who said: “This is excellent news for Penarth and the Vale, and I am delighted that this provision has been included as part of the scheme. I am aware from my involvement locally that a number of groups and individuals will use this facility and am grateful that Cllr James and his officers have been able to develop a scheme in which the needs of all road users are catered for.”
