Vital facilities welcomed in Swansea

Plymouth_Street_EntranceDisability groups have welcomed news that Swansea’s new bus station will include vital changing facilities for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

The development of the state-of-the-art Changing Places toilets at the Quadrant redevelopment will mean that Swansea has four out of the seven facilities that have been developed in Wales.

The facilities are specially designed for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities as well as other serious impairments such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis or an acquired brain injury.

Existing Changing Places sites are already at the Civic Centre, the LC and Swansea Resource Centre.

Charles Peck from Swansea Access for Everyone said: “The fact that four of the seven Changing Places facilities in Wales will be here in Swansea shows that the Council is making a real effort to provide better access for everyone.

“We want more people to visit Swansea and enjoy the city. These important facilities will ensure everyone can enjoy what Swansea has to offer.

“Swansea is moving in the right direction to be more inclusive.”

The Quadrant Bus Station is being developed using significant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and the Wales European Funding Office.

When completed, the new station will house 20 bus bays, three coach stands, a modern passenger waiting area, ticketing services and Shopmobility facilities.

John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “The new bus station will provide a real boost to public transport services in the city. The addition of the Changing Places facility will ensure that it is accessible to everyone.”
