Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George, said that “getting Newtown moving” is a key priority for him in 2012.
Mr George, who has two scheduled meetings with Government Ministers in the next two weeks, will be using both opportunities to highlight the impact that traffic problems are having on local businesses and residents. He will be telling the Business Minister, Edwina Hart and the Transport Minister, Carl Sargeant, that they must do everything they can to ease traffic congestion in order to strengthen the local economy.
Comment, Mr George said:
“As the Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire, one of my main objectives for 2012 will be strengthening the Mid Wales economy.
“One of the ways we can do that is by investing in infrastructure – the Newtown Bypass – and by improving current road transport connections.
“Since my election in May, I have been telling the Welsh Government that they must find a viable and permanent solution to the traffic problems in Newtown, so that we can finally end the daily misery for thousands of commuters.
“Previous Welsh Government interventions have not worked, so Ministers should concede and trial a return of a roundabout as soon as possible.
“I know from previous discussions with Mr Sargeant, that he is potentially open to this idea. Therefore, I will be doing all I can to persuade him and Mrs Hart that it’s in the economic best interests of the whole of Mid Wales that this roundabout is restored and we get Newtown moving.”
