Boating enthusiasts at Britain’s favourite beach will get a slipway that’s bigger and better than ever if plans by Swansea Council are approved.
The Blue Flag-beach at Port Eynon proudly bears the title of Britain’s Favourite Beach, 2011, as voted for by thousands of visitors to what is one of Gower’s most popular destinations.
And now there are plans to extend and repair the slipway and create new signage in the area so that boat-owners can continue to enjoy Gower’s stunning scenery from the sea.
Graham Thomas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Recreation, said: “The slipway at Port Eynon is already a popular location for boat-owners because it’s one of the few sites available on the Gower peninsular from where they can put to sea.
“By extending the slipway and increasing the signage to let people know about it will encourage more people to visit Gower and safeguard Port Eynon’s status as a Blue Flag beach at the same time.”
Tourism is one of Swansea’s biggest industries, attracting more than 4m visitors a year, employing around 5,000 people and generating income of £317m.
Cllr Thomas said: “We’re very proud Port Eynon was voted Britain’s Favourite Beach, 2011, in the poll carried out by Cadbury’s. Research tells us that beaches are high on the list of reasons why people visit Swansea and Gower. This extra investment would add extra lustre to Port Eynon’s golden reputation.”
The report to Cabinet is seeking approval to put in a planning application for the repair and extension works to the slipway at Port Eynon. If approved, the improvements will be paid for through a European Regional Development Grant.
