The hard work and dedication of a Rhondda Cynon Taf Council employee has been honoured with a prestigious Welsh Government award.
Niall Casserly, 55, received the impressive accolade for the substantial work he has put into protecting children affected by substance misuse.
At the forefront of developing new services, Niall was originally nominated for a ‘Recognising Achievement Award’ in response to the pioneering contribution he has made in tackling the issue.
Since joining the Council five years ago, Niall has accomplished much; from the foundation of a website that offers information and advice on substance misuse, to heading a number of social marketing campaigns highlighting the effects of both parents alcohol use and how this influences their children as well as the link between alcohol use and domestic abuse.
The Award was presented by First Minister Carwyn Jones during an exciting ceremony held at the SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff.
Niall said: “It was touching to be nominated for the award, and a great experience meeting the First Minister.
“However, effective results can only be seen when a variety of people with different expertise come together and work towards a common goal; the safeguarding of children affected by substance misuse.
“The achievements that I have been involved in were made possible by the close collaboration of many people across the Council, who work collaboratively to ensure that the needs of local communities are met.”
Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Annette Davies, said: “This award has offered Niall some much deserved recognition of the important work he has undertaken. It also highlights the level of professionalism and dedication with which the Council approaches issues of child protection.
“The Council provides vital services which aim to ensure that vulnerable children within Rhondda Cynon Taf are fully protected. It is thanks to the efforts of those who work within this sector that we are able to make these aims a reality.”
Since being nominated for his award, Niall has joined the new Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil Integrated Family Support Team whose joint efforts continue to protect young people across the two counties. Not only have these initiatives made an impact locally but are now being rolled out across the country, helping to protect vulnerable children throughout Wales.
