To mark the final week of Cardiff’s Robinson Crusoe and the Caribbean Pirates performance; the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Prof. Delme Bowen, took to the stage with cast members to promote the Small Change, Big Difference campaign, which is being run by his nominated charity – Cancer Research Wales – and supported by the New Theatre.
During the Christmas period, the show’s star, Christopher Biggins, urged audiences to dig-deep and donate money to the after-show collection organised by New Theatre staff. An impressive £5,811 was raised, which will now help Cancer Research Wales to continue its vital and innovative work. This includes researching the causes of all types of cancer and developing and enhancing treatment methods.
Expressing his personal thanks, Councillor Bowen said: “This amazing total is the perfect example of many people giving small amounts and making a huge difference. “Like all the funds raised by Cancer Research Wales, this money will be spent in Wales on research that benefits us all. Unfortunately, few of us can say that cancer hasn’t touched our lives in some way, at some point so I am grateful to the pantomime’s audiences for their generosity.
“I’d also like to thank Christopher Biggins and the rest of the cast for supporting this very worthwhile cause by encouraging people to give what they can.”
Christopher Biggins said: “On behalf of the whole Robinson Crusoe company I would like to extend our thanks to the people of South Wales for their support. At a time when money is short it gladdens the heart that panto audiences have chosen to dig deep and help such an important charity.”
The Small Change, Big Difference campaign is an ongoing fundraiser for Cancer Research Wales and every penny raised helps to contribute towards the £1.5m that the charity needs to find each year to continue its good work.
Councillor Bowen added: “You may see small cardboard collection boxes promoting the campaign placed around offices, public places or even in people’s homes. The idea is that over time, any spare change you can give mounts-up and the greater number of people contributing, the greater the impact.”
