Cardiff Council to Offer Same Day Burial Service

Cardiff Council’s Bereavement Service will soon launch a new provision that will mean, for those who need to bury a loved one without undue delay, a funeral may take place on the same day as the application is made provided the necessary criteria is met.

The service, due to begin in April, will be available 7 days per week and on some bank holidays, and follows the success of a facility, operated since 2004, where a burial can be arranged at short notice for those with a cultural or religious need.

In order to take advantage of the new provision, it would be necessary for the funeral booking to be made to Bereavement Services by 10:30 am. In addition, legal paperwork would have to be submitted by 12:00 noon. The burial can then take place on the same day in an available 2:30 or 3:30 pm slot.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member with responsibility for Bereavement Services, said: “There have been a number of enquiries from some community groups across the city requesting this new service as some people have a need to bury their loved ones quickly. Bereavement is a difficult process as it is and we are duty bound to respond to the needs of the residents of Cardiff wherever possible.”
