Christine Chapman raises Phurnacite with First Minister

Cynon Valley AM Christine Chapman has asked the First Minister for assurances that work will continue on regenerating the former Phurnacite site in Abercwmboi. Following on from a recent meeting with the First Minister, Mrs Chapman raised the matter in the Welsh Assembly during questions. Mrs Chapman said “I am pleased about the work that has already taken place at the Phurnacite, but there is still much more to be done”.

Mrs Chapman focused on the measures the Welsh Government had taken to improve the environment of former industrial sites across Wales as part of their wider work on the Welsh environment since devolution. Mrs Chapman asked the First Minister for assurances that the Welsh Government would continue to work with local partners, saying this would be critical to the future regeneration of the area.

First Minister Carwyn Jones AM said: “The proposals for the Phurnacite site are now adopted in Rhondda Cynon Taf’s local development plan. It will be a mixed-use development, comprising of a river park and an open recreation space, and the remnants of the former industrial process will be removed in order to create those uses and to enhance the existing ecology of the site”.
