A Port Talbot woman has scooped a prestigious award at the Swansea Bay Woman of the Year ceremony.
Dawn Sawyers has been commended for her work with the Special Needs Activity Centre (SNAC) for the last fifteen years.
Dawn, (pictured with Ruth Jones) whose son is registered blind, joined the club when it was running in a local youth club on Saturday mornings.
In 1996, she became chair of the committee and took up the challenge of raising funds to keep the club afloat.
Since then, she has worked tirelessly organising fundraising events and applying for funding and grants. Her efforts were rewarded in 2001 when a new purpose built centre opened in Margam with funding from the Lottery and Corus.
The club now has 130 children and young adults and operates an open to all policy in the community. It is the only play and leisure facility in South Wales for children and young adults with special needs.
Dawn continues to champion the cause for special needs youngsters and raises the monies to keep the facility going.
Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “This award recognises women who make a significant contribution to the community through volunteer work.
“Dawn is a very deserving winner and I congratulate and thank her for all she does to bring benefits to others.”
