Flintshire’s Coastal Rangers, Streetscene team, local councillors, Airbus graduates and external contractors all joined forces this week to clear twenty tons of rubbish and 100 bags of litter from The Rock in Connah’s Quay – in just one day!
The work at The Rock is part of a major clean up and regeneration project, and is just one of the projects being carried out by Flintshire Coastal Rangers as part of the final preparations for the opening of the Wales Coastal Path in May this year. All Coastal Path works at The Rock are being funded by the Welsh Government, Countryside Council for Wales, and Tidy Towns.
Councillor Peter Macfarlane and Councillor Eric Owen were among those who helped out; Cllr Owen said:
“This work has needed doing for a long time now and it’s nice to see such tremendous support from so many difference organisations. I truly believe that The Rock will be an asset to the people of Connah’s Quay.”
To date some of the work undertaken at The Rock has included re-opening long lost footpaths, a Big Dee Day Litterpick, the planting of spring bulbs and the installation of new benches. New cast iron bollards are now ready to be installed, and historical wall repairs are also being planned.
Among the rubbish removed from the internationally important rare reed bed habitat this week were old shopping trolleys, sofas, discarded electrical equipment, children’s toys, scooters, and a toddler’s plastic tricycle.
Karen Rippin, the Coastal Ranger leading the project, said:
“We’re so grateful to all those who have already given their time, and worked hard to clean up The Rock. Although a considerable amount of work has already been done, there is still lots to do and we need local volunteers to help us! Edward Musson, Airbus Graduate, said “It was great to work with the coastal rangers and help to improve the local community. The best part of the day was right at the end when you could see just how much we had achieved. I look forward to going back to Connah’s Quay to see how the finished site looks.”
