Medieval Christmas in the shadow of the castle

images_081209122300This weekend (12th and 13th December) thousands of people are expected to flock to Caerphilly town centre to soak up the festive atmosphere at this year’s Medieval Christmas Fayre.

The event promises to be bigger and better than ever before as the main street through the town centre will close to traffic to make room for over 60 stalls. The event will transform the town and Castle into a Medieval Christmas wonderland where visitors can enjoy the sounds and smells of Christmas with entertainment such as Jack the Jester, a dragon puppeteer, a dragon stiltwalker and a medieval magician. Father Christmas will also be arriving by horse and cart on Saturday to greet children in Caerphilly Castle.

A new addition to the event this year is ‘Lenny the Land Train’ offering FREE rides from surrounding car parks to the market site.

Children will love also the small funfair rides dotted around the town along with a children’s craft workshop in Twyn Community Centre.

Visitors can explore the range of goods on offer in the market stalls, choose from local cheeses, wine, hand-made chocolates, cakes, crafts and hand-made jewellery – to name but a few. The town has a great range of shops to explore along with a selection of pubs and cafes to stop and grab a bite to eat. Caerphilly Castle has many more stalls within the Castle walls and a Continental Market will be based at The Twyn selling a range of breads, cheeses, beverages, crepes and much more.

Enjoy traditional Christmas cheer with roast chestnuts, mulled wine and a hog roast, all available from the town’s very own Café Refresh, who will have a stall outside the Visit Caerphilly Centre all weekend.

Road Closure

Cardiff Road (from it’s junction with Clive Street and Bartlett Street) and Castle Street (North bound carriageway only) will be closed from 6.00am until 7.00pm on both days of the event.

Parking

The Twyn car park is closed for the event. A free park and ride service will operate from St Ilan School, Pontygwindy Road 9.00am to 5.30pm on Saturday and 10.00am to 4.30pm on Sunday. Alternative town centre parking is available at Crescent Road car park and Caerphilly Railway Station Park and Ride.

Discount shopping vouchers

As well as the many stalls and attractions on offer over the weekend, a number of local shops in Caerphilly town centre are also supporting the Festive Fayre by offering a range of discounts to shoppers.

Special discount vouchers can be picked up from the Visit Caerphilly Centre (opposite Caerphilly Castle) for use on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th. Some stores are offering 5% or 10% off as well as many other special offers.
