Flintshire County Council’s Holocaust Memorial Day 2012

Young people from the Flintshire Youth Forum and Holywell High School spoke out against discrimination, genocide and the Holocaust during an event held at Connah’s Quay Civic Hall to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January).

In keeping with this year’s theme, ‘Speak up, Speak out’, Flintshire Youth Forum wrote and performed ‘Genocide’, a play which inspired and moved the audience. Two students from Holywell High School read compelling poems they had written on the same subject.

The Chair of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Hilary McGuill, gave a speech on the significance of remembering the Holocaust and of preventing bullying, discrimination and genocides, as seen across the world in recent years. Afterwards, she said:

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Arnold Woolley, and Mark Isherwood AM, were very supportive of the young people’s efforts and were impressed with the informed and insightful message developed for marking this powerful event.

Flintshire Council’s Arts, Culture and Events Team worked in partnership with Flintshire Youth Forum and Menter Iaith Sir y Fflint to encourage these young people to develop this very successful and dynamic event.
