The Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Assembly has questioned the ‘inaction’ of successive Welsh Governments in dealing with long-standing allegations surrounding the All Wales Ethnic Minority Association (AWEMA), and has called for proper scrutiny of a report due to be published this week.
Questioning the First Minister yesterday afternoon, Andrew RT Davies AM also called for confirmation of a government statement following the report’s publication.
Speaking outside the chamber, Mr Davies said:
“Thursday’s report comes shortly before the assembly’s half-term recess and follows this week’s plenary sessions. Questioning the ministers concerned – at least in the short-term – will therefore be problematic.
“However, despite the decision to publish on this date, it is absolutely critical that this report receives the utmost scrutiny from assembly members across all political parties.
“This is a very serious issue that has been building for some time and I question the inaction of previous Labour governments and the subsequent ministerial failure in dealing with the allegations. These are extremely serious and in some cases may ‘contravene human rights’.
“I have already written to the First Minister expressing my concerns over transparency and the support given to the Labour party by the CEO’s family during political campaigning. I again urge him to ensure that all decisions have been – and will be – taken with due diligence.”
