With severe weather conditions set to continue into the weekend – even snow, heavy rain and temperatures as low as -10°C predicted to hit some parts of South Wales – Cardiff Council is urging communities to work together with local services to ensure that those at most risk during the cold spell, such as vulnerable and elderly neighbours, remain safe and warm.
Although the Council has contingency plans in place to help tackle the Winter weather should conditions deteriorate and it is monitoring the situation closely, it is also urging communities to work together by offering to help those who are finding it difficult to leave their houses to collect essentials such as food, medicines and supplies to keep warm.
Councillor Judith Woodman, Executive Member for Housing Communities and Social Justice, said: “Please make sure that you take care when out and about as conditions are obviously icy. As with the last cold snap, it was heartening to see communities pulling together to help one another and I strongly encourage this;
“If you can help any vulnerable or elderly neighbours, your offer of assistance is normally greatly appreciated as they often won’t ask for help themselves.
“Make use of the portable salt grits located around the city – they are there for you to use locally.
”It’s also worthwhile making sure that you have useful items such as a torch, batteries and blankets stored in easy to locate places in the house in case you suffer power cuts”.
