Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has challenged the Welsh Education Minister to take action to prevent schools from falling victim to rumours about their future.
School closure rumours over the past 3 years have led to falling pupil numbers at Conway Road Infants in Colwyn Bay, which is now facing the axe as part of an area wide school modernisation plan put forward by Conwy County Borough Council. Empty places at the school have been cited by the Council as a reason for closure.
Darren Millar said:
“Any suggestion that a school may close, even if untrue, leads to uncertainty for parents and staff, which can result in some mums and dads moving their children to other schools.
“This drastic action can lead to such fall in pupil numbers that the future of the school really is then in doubt.
“The Education Minister must do more to ensure that Councils change the way in which they communicate with parents about school modernisation programmes before more schools fall victim to the rumour mill.”
Over 630 people have signed a petition opposing the closure of Conway Road Infants.
Darren said:
“The school has stood at the heart of the community for generations and I am overwhelmed by the level of local support it has received.
“Decision makers must listen to those who are fighting for the future of this much loved local school.”
