Hair-dressed for success

With show-stopping hair, beautiful body paint and glamorous makeup, Coleg Gwent students impressed the judges in the semi-finals of the 2012 AHT (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) UK Trainee Competition, scooping two gold medals, a silver and three bronze.

Coleg Gwent students battled it out against competitors from Wales and the South West in the different categories of the regional heats for a place in the national AHT final.  For the hair competition, categories included Ladies Evening Style, Men’s Commercial Cut and Finish and Ladies Long Hair.  The beauty categories included nail art, face and body painting and 1940s makeup.

Competitors from the College’s Crosskeys and City of Newport Campuses had plenty to celebrate as they secured national final places.

“We are thrilled with the results and very proud of the students’ exceptional hard work,” said Crosskeys Campus Hair & Beauty Lecturer Rachel Meehan.

Maxine Harrison, Hair and Beauty Lecturer at City of Newport Campus, added: “All the students competing did a fantastic job against a high standard of entries and are now hoping to continue their success at the AHT national final in March.”

The winners from this regional round received medals and certificates along with a place in the National Finals in Blackpool, where they will be representing Wales and the West in March 2012.
