The Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre, based at Coleg Gwent’s Pontypool Campus, has been selected by the Welsh Government to deliver intensive Welsh courses for primary school teachers.
The course aims to develop primary teachers’ Welsh-language skills to Welsh for Adults Foundation Level, the first step of a recognised path to learning Welsh. The long-term aim is to teach Welsh or through the medium of Welsh, contributing to bilingualism in schools and creating a Welsh-language ethos.
The face-to-face training is based on the WLPAN course, which is a course that has been proven to produce Welsh speakers. Director for the Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre, Geraint Wilson-Price, explains more: “The course concentrates on immersing practitioners in the language in order to nurture their skills quickly and the course content will be in the context of a teacher’s work.”
The Welsh Government’s Sabbatical Scheme will reimburse the school for the costs of a supply teacher to undertake successful applicants’ duties for the duration of the course. The programme is open to all current full or part-time teachers in an English-medium or bilingual primary school who already have a basic level of Welsh to build on. There are 12 places on the course being held at Coleg Gwent’s Pontypool Campus, the first one starting on 23 April for 11 weeks.
