Hatching plans: success for College’s first poultry graduates

Four Coleg Gwent students have become the College’s first poultry production graduates after completing their studies in just three months.

Coleg Gwent is the only College in Wales to offer poultry production, which covers subjects such as husbandry, welfare and health & safety, at its Usk Campus.

Four students, Sian Davies, Liz Powell, Jackie Powell and Tracy Thomas, have recently all become the first Coleg Gwent students to achieve the qualification.

Usk Campus lecturer Kelvin Vater said: “We set up the course due to demand from poultry producers, who require their meat suppliers to undertake training in the industry.

“Thanks to the knowledge of the students and hard work from our assessors, it’s been a great success.”

One of the four students, cattle and sheep farmer Sian Davies, 38, from Rhayader said: “This qualification enables the business to meet standards required to sell free-range chicken and to gain a poultry passport.

“I started out in poultry two years ago to diversify our farm producing quality free-range chicken, so it was really important for me to get this qualification to secure the future of my business.

“With the excellent support of Coleg Gwent tutors, I was able to complete the course in just three months, so I’m really grateful for all the hard work they put in.”
