This is the first World Cup event awarded by the ICF (International Canoe Federation) to Cardiff International White Water which opened in Cardiff in March 2010.
Canoe Cardiff 2012 gives people the chance to see world-class water sport heroes, including teams who will compete in the London 2012 Olympics Games. A specially-built grandstand will see paddlers ride a 300m adrenaline fuelled course, racing through up to 25 gates, in raging rapids. Exhibition stands at the event village will also be showcasing the latest in paddle kit and water sports equipment.
With over 38 nations competing, the World Cup Series is the most prestigious event for Canoe Slalom professionals, and is one of the most exciting Canoe Slalom events in the calendar for paddlers and spectators alike.
Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said “I am delighted that Cardiff is hosting this year’s Canoe Slalom World Cup. Spectators will be able to see world class water sports up-close in the state of the art, Olympic-standard, Cardiff International White Water (CIWW).
“The Council has worked closely with the Welsh Government in securing the Canoe Slalom World Cup.
“The city has proven time and time again that we can play host to world class sporting events, and CIWW is attracting a whole new sporting audience to the city.
“What makes Paddlesports particularly exciting is that anyone inspired by the event can experience the thrill of white water. It is wonderful to see CIWW being used by all abilities, from beginner to Olympic professional.”
