A team of youngsters from Monmouthshire are the 2012 Welsh Young Consumers of the Year champions after defeating stiff opposition from ten other sides representing local authorities across Wales. Richard Jones, Isabelle Godfrey, Isabella Yaxley and George Linehan from Chepstow Comprehensive will now represent Wales in the national final to be held during the Trading Standard Institute conference in Manchester this June.
The Young Consumers competition, now in its 26th year, continues to go from strength to strength in Wales. This year’s final, held in Llandrindod Wells’ Metropole Hotel on 13th March was a hard fought and close contest and the team from Chepstow did extremely well to win by two points.
Sue Hollin, Monmouthshire Trading Standards Consumer Advice and Education officer who mentored the team said: “Pupils from all over Wales were a credit to their respective authorities and their knowledge illustrates the merit of educating young people about consumer rights and good citizenship from an early age. I am very proud of the way the team from Chepstow School competed in the all Wales final and would like to extend my praise to them for all their efforts. I would also like to thank their teacher Aled Elias and Monmouthshire County Council’s chairman Brian Hood MBE for supporting a very worthwhile and fun event”.
Chairman Brian Hood MBE added: “These students are a credit to their school and the county of Monmouthshire. I was very impressed at the depth of their knowledge regarding consumer affairs”.
