The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Brain Griffiths will have an early festive treat on Monday, December 14, when he, along with the Mayoress will visit the staff and volunteers of Flat Holm Island.

The trip will provide Christmas cheer to the island staff and volunteers who for the first time since the lighthouse keepers left the island will stay there over Christmas and play host to a special Christmas break.

Ten lucky travellers have booked an experience of a lifetime and will be the first ever to spend Christmas on the Island, with warden Matthew Lipton and his staff on hand to make their visit extra special.

The visit by the Mayor and Mayoress is based on a tradition when island lighthouse keepers would be visited by the RAF or RNLI , who would give them a Christmas hamper.

The Mayor and Mayoress will also take the opportunity to explore the island to find out more about recent developments on the island and to see what’s in store for 2010.

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Brian Griffiths, said: “I am really looking forward to my visit to Flat Holm Island, and meeting the staff and volunteers who work hard all year to look after such a beautiful place.

“What makes this visit particularly special is for the first time ever Matthew and his team will spend Christmas on the island, so I am interested to find out what’s planned for their unique Christmas celebrations.”
