Leanne Wood’s first visit as Plaid Cymru leader was to a special school to hear pupils’ difficulty with accessibility issues.
The AM for South Wales Central listened to pupils from Ysgol Erw’r Delyn in Penarth describe their difficulties during shopping trips to Cardiff. Problems with high kerbs outside fast-food restaurants, narrow spaces in store aisles and a lack of disabled parking provision were common themes during various visits to Cardiff.
The children of Ysgol Erw’r Delyn have been working with Mencap Cymru on a project looking at the accessibility issues facing users of motorised wheelchairs.
Ms Wood took the opportunity to stress that Plaid Cymru is committed to fighting for disability rights as it undertakes the work of renewing the party following the leadership election.
Plaid Cymru’s leader Leanne Wood said: “I’m very pleased that my first visit as Plaid leader was to Ysgol Erw’r Delyn today. The students raised some very important issues and underlined the message that a lot more needs to be done on improving disabled access to the sort of places that able-bodied people take for granted.
“It was also important for me to stress to the pupils, their teachers and the staff from Mencap that Plaid Cymru is focused on building a country and an economy that does not leave anybody behind.
“While my party is undergoing a process of renewal, having carried out an extensive internal review, it is important to stress that we maintain a strong focus on the issues that are important to us.”
