Denbighshire Youth Service is turning creative in its efforts to engage with young people across the county.
The service is the first in Denbighshire to use QR codes- designs that are similar to bar codes – and the Council has trialled them on posters in a number of Denbighshire schools in a bid to get more people involved in the Youth Service.
Young people can scan these codes using their mobile phones and they are then taken directly to a website or social media account such as Facebook or Twitter where they can access further information, such as contact details.
The initiative, piloted at Ysgol Glan Clwyd, St Asaph and Denbigh High School has already had some success, with 70 young people scanning the QR codes to access information
Jamie Groves, Head of Leisure, Libraries and Community Development, said: “We are always looking at ways of engaging with young people and sometimes the more traditional methods such as newsletters and advertising are not appealing to our young people.
“We need to think outside the box and make the best use of the technology available to us. Using these QR codes is an exciting way of getting people linked up to information about our service and it’s really simple.
“Roger Ellerton, Denbighshire’s Principal Youth and Community Officer, said: “You can use these codes on a wide range of materials, including printed materials, clothing and building walls.
“The opportunities are endless and if the pilot scheme in Youth Service is successful, we will look at whether we can adopt the initiative for the benefit of other Council services.
“We need to embrace opportunities to use the latest technology for the benefit of our young people and the wider community.
