Pier Purchase

The future of the Victoria Pier in Colwyn Bay looks a little more secure as Conwy County Borough Council becomes the new owner of the beleaguered structure.

Conwy Council has confirmed that with the assistance of Welsh Government, it had taken ownership of the 112 year old structure as part of the multi-million pound regeneration programme taking place in the town.

Iwan Davies, Chief Executive, Conwy County Borough Council said, “The Council recognises that the pier is a key feature of the waterfront and a gateway between the town centre and the promenade.”

“With significant investment throughout the town, and on the waterfront in particular, it is essential that the pier becomes integral to those plans.  Acquiring the pier is not without risks, but the Council has assessed the likely scenarios and decided that taking control of the pier now is less risky than standing by and doing nothing. We’ll be working closely with the community enterprise Shore Thing to make sure we can make progress in a constructive and positive way.”

With the ownership issue clarified Conwy Council and Shore Thing are now able to progress with applications for funding the restoration and redevelopment of Victoria Pier.

If grant funding is received, once restored Shore Thing will be able to operate the pier as a sustainable leisure / tourism asset for the town.
