Wales Book of the Year 2012

On Thursday 10 May Literature Wales will be joined by some of Wales’ best loved poets as they announce which writers have made it on to the Wales Book of the Year 2012 Short List.

In the tranquil surroundings of Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon, the audience will be treated to readings by current and former Bardd Plant Cymru Eurig Salisbury and Ceri Wyn Jones, National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke and Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Make sure that you’re there by contacting Theatr Brycheiniog today on 01874 611622 to buy your ticket.

This year the Wales Book of the Year Award will have a fresh look; in 2012 there will be no Long List but instead an English and Welsh-language Short List of three books in three categories – Poetry, Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction. The Chairs of the English and Welsh-language Judging Panels, Dr Spencer Jordan and Dr Jason Walford Davies respectively, will take to the stage following the readings to give a short adjudication and to reveal who has made it on to the Wales Book of the Year 2012 Short List.

The winners will be announced at an Award Ceremony on Thursday 12 July at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. Each category winner will take home a cheque for £2,000, and the overall winner will bag an additional £6,000.

Literature Wales is very pleased to announce that the previously bi-annual Roland Mathias Prize will, from this year on, be part of the Wales Book of the Year Award. The winner of the English-language Poetry Category will be named the Roland Mathias Poetry Award Winner.

Glyn Mathias, Founder of the Roland Mathias Prize said: “It is very good news that the Roland Mathias Prize is now part of the new-style Wales Book of the Year. My father was a poet and critic who did so much to promote Welsh writing in English in his time, and the prize in his name was designed to commemorate that. He would have been immensely proud that his name is now associated with this poetry prize and particularly pleased to know that the Wales Book of the Year is coming to Brecon this year.”

Lleucu Siencyn, Literature Wales Chief Executive said: “Wales Book of the Year Award is back and the new changes that are now in place allow us to congratulate and award a wider range of writers than ever before. Let’s get together to celebrate the prolific writers that we have here in Wales and more than anything, in 2012, let’s get reading.”
