A team of students from Gower College Swansea have scooped an award from the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW).
The prize was handed to them at the recent Welsh National Convention of Excellence in Engineering and Technology held at the Celtic Manor.
The annual EESW event, sponsored by SEMTA, the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies, involved contributions from 90 schools and colleges in Wales.
The students, from the Advanced Digital Technology course at Tycoch, took the ‘Best Vocational FE College Solution’ award.
“The team performed really well on the day and I was very impressed with their presentation skills,” says lecturer Steve Williams. “We will spend our £500 prize money on further developing the facilities within our area for the students.”
Trojan Electronics sponsored the Gower College Swansea team and set their brief, which was to develop a solution to enable the upgrading of firmware on smart television sets. Their winning design was a sophisticated piece of software for a barcode scanner.
“We were delighted to sponsor these students and really pleased they went on to win the award,” says Clive Murphy, Managing Director of Trojan Electronics. “We have undertaken numerous joint activities and training with the college and have always been impressed with the results. It works well for all parties – the college, the students and Trojan. The quality of our work with the college has always been superb and I am not surprised they won, the students and the college owe a lot of thanks to Steve and his team for their dedicated and comprehensive approach to teaching.”
