Caernarfon vantage point gets a makeover

The Twthill area of Caernarfon has been given a spring clean thanks to two environmental projects funded by Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns scheme.

The Tidy Towns Focus on Caernarfon has included a grant aided project to improve access and visibility on the mountain which overlooks Caernarfon, known locally as Ben Twthill. The work involves the improvement of existing footpaths, pruning and trimming back overgrowth, repainting the railings around the war memorial and installing a new bench halfway up the path. The site entrance and small parking have also being tidied and a new dog waste bin has been installed.

The residential area of Twthill has been the focus of the second project – a blitz of environmental problems. The work includes cleaning, weeding, trimming, renewing faulty signs, replacing a tree, placing a new litter bin and painting work.

The Council’s Street Enforcement Officers are also continuing their investigation of dog fouling offences in the area.

Peter Simpson, Gwynedd Council’s Streetscene Manager, said: “By working in partnership with the community we have been able to target local concerns about anti-social behaviour directly. I am very grateful to Twthill residents who organise regular volunteer litter picks on Ben Twthill. I believe this illustrates how the Tidy Towns scheme can have a very positive effect within the local community.

“Twthill is also one of several areas on our current “blitz” programme. This popular initiative continues to deliver visible improvements to our towns and villages by using Community Gangs to focus on key areas and carry out those small but very important jobs that make a real difference.”

Katherine Owen, Caernarfon Town Council’s clerk, said: “I am very pleased that Gwynedd’s Tidy Towns scheme has enabled the Council to focus on and improve this historic and very scenic part of Caernarfon. It shows how partnership working can achieve visible results.”

Dr Berwyn Owen, speaking on behalf of local residents and Ben Twthill Volunteers, added: “We are extremely grateful to Cyngor Gwynedd and Tidy Towns for undertaking the significant improvements to Ben Twthill, a panoramic viewing area and reputedly once used as an encampment by Owain Glyndwr. The improvements which include new paths, clearing overgrowth, painting and general tidying, will hopefully attract many visitors and locals to the best view point in Caernarfon.”

The Tidy Towns grant has been made possible by funding from the Welsh Government’s environmental improvement programme and Gwynedd Council works in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy.
