Work to begin on Westgate Street

A series of bollards which enforce the road closure of Westgate Street for event days will be installed in Westgate Street on Monday 16th April until Aril 30.

The implementation of these works will involve a two-week partial closure of Westgate Street with managed access for residents and businesses throughout, including deliveries.

Resurfacing work is to be carried out simultaneously on Westgate Street for two weeks in April to minimise disruption.

The work is essential maintenance that will vastly improve the road service for pedestrians, cyclist, motorists and bus users.

The static bollards are being installed in Westgate Street in preparation of the Olympic Games football events being held in the city. The bollards will help enforce the road closure of Westgate Street for all future event days.

The closures will be phased to minimise disruption.

From Monday, April 16 to Monday, April 23 the north section of Westgate Street (Castle Street end) will be closed for eight days. During this period residents, businesses, delivery vehicles and taxis can access Westgate Street from Wood Street.

From Tuesday April 24 the south section of Westgate Street (from its junction with Park Street) will be closed and access to the area will be via Castle Street.

Westgate will then re-open in its entirety on Monday, April 30, although all these timings and dates are subject to change dependent on services and road conditions.

Access for businesses will be maintained at all times. Changes will also be taking place to bus services operating via Westgate Street during the work. For full details please see the attached leaflet. All Stagecoach and Newport Bus services will start and finish in Greyfriars Road.

Advance warning signs will be in place leading up to the start of the work.

Staff will be on-street to provide information regarding these changes and this information will also be placed in bus shelters.
