Eleven local businesses in Swansea have opened up their toilets for public use, ensuring visitors to the city have no problems spending a penny.
Pubs, cafes and even fitness centres, have taken advantage of a grant scheme introduced by the Welsh Assembly to increase the number of public conveniences available in the city.
Swansea Council has helped businesses sign up to the ‘Local Facilities Access Grant’ scheme and provided them with a grant that can be used to help keep the toilets open to the public.
The grant enables businesses to claim up to £500 per premises for allowing the public access, free of charge, to their toilet facilities, during opening hours.
To qualify for the grant, businesses have to meet a number of criteria including making sure the facilities are an acceptable standard in terms of safety, hygiene, accessibility for disabled people and for both sexes.
John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said, “Providing public conveniences are an essential service and one which local businesses can assist with.
“I’m pleased that some businesses recognise the importance of providing these services and are doing their bit to ensure Swansea provides a welcoming environment for visitors and residents.”
Swansea Council operates 19 public conveniences throughout the city and has previously won awards for specific sites.
