Successful open day at Awel y Coleg

The people of Penllyn had an exclusive chance to look around the new extra care housing development at Awel y Coleg, Y Bala.

Building work on the development is progressing well, and Gwynedd Council and Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd – which are behind the development – are confident they will be able to welcome the first residents to their new homes in the autumn.

Awel y Coleg is the first facility of its kind in Gwynedd and the £5.3 million investment will provide local people with accommodation and care as they get older.

Around 60 people attended the event on Tuesday, 24 April. There was a chance to find out more about the development and the services being offered at an exhibition at Canolfan Bro Tegid in the town. Those interested in taking an apartment at Awel y Coleg were given the opportunity to be led around a show flat by a member of staff.

Dafydd Lewis, Gwynedd Council Corporate Director, said: “Awel y Coleg has been a hive of activity and finally all the pieces of the jig-saw are falling into place.

“People who are interested in taking an apartment, and their families, were really keen to have this chance to have a look around and to get a better idea of what day-to-day life will be like at Awel y Coleg.

“People were pleasantly surprised by the size of the apartments and were also eager to learn about living and care costs and what sort of care services are available, should they need them.

“The Council sees this type of accommodation with care support as an important new choice for Gwynedd residents, which will help them stay independent for longer as they get older.”

Noela Jones, Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd’s Director of Housing and Communities, added: “We are proud to be working in partnership with Gwynedd Council in developing the first extra care housing scheme in the county, and it is very pleasing to see so many more people wanting to live at Awel y Coleg.”

A new information booklet about Awel y Coleg was launched at the event. Those interested in the scheme should look out for copies locally or contact Tai Clwyd on 0345 230 3150.
