Anglesey Trading Standards carried out an undercover operation to coincide with the release of GCSE results last month.
A day notorious for underage drinking, officers visited 24 off licensed premises with a 15-year-old volunteer to attempt purchase alcohol. Of the 24 premises visited only one (4%) served the underage youngster.
Principal Trading Standards Officer, Emma L Jones said, “Underage drinking is one of the main causes of the anti-social behaviour seen on our streets. Selling alcohol to anyone under 18 is illegal and completely unacceptable. Its reassuring to find that the vast majority of off-licences on Anglesey do act responsibly and their efforts are to be commended as a good example to others.”
A formal investigation will now be conducted into the single incident with appropriate enforcement action taken against the offending premises. Those found guilty of supplying alcohol to underage children could lose their licence and face a fine of up to £1,000 for each offence.
