The National Assembly’s Petitions Committee has written to the Welsh Transport Minister to request an update on when a formal timetable will be produced to decide the future of the Dyfi Bridge.
The Committee has taken this action in response to a petition brought forward by the South Meirionnydd Older People’s Forum, who has called on the Welsh Government to prioritise the creation of a new bridge over the Afon Dyfi.
Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George, who is a member of the Assembly’s Petitions Committee, said he was pleased with the Committee’s decision but stated that the ball was now ‘firmly in the court’ of the Minister and that he needed to give a firm indication on when a public consultation would start on developing a new bridge.
Commenting, Mr George said:
“I am pleased that the Committee is scrutinising the Minister’s progress on his future intentions for the Dyfi Bridge and is attempting to pin him down on a firm timetable for action.
“There has been far too much Government dithering over this issue and residents are rightly concerned.
“There needs to be clarity from the Minister on his plans for the future of this key crossing over the Afon Dyfi and we need it with the upmost of urgency, so the public can have their say.
“This delay to act is just consigning the Dyfi Valley and its residents to more inconvenience, disruption and indeed potentially life threatening delays.”
