Reduced insurance premiums expected as flood risk is reduced

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has AM has welcomed news that the Environment Agency has confirmed a dramatic reduction in the number of residential properties at significant risk of flooding in his constituency.

The Environment Agency wrote to Darren after he raised concerns about insurance premium hikes and news that an agreement between the UK Government and the Association of British Insurers, which ensures access to affordable insurance for homeowners, is coming to an end.

The number of properties in Clwyd West now deemed to be at significant risk of flooding by the Environment Agency is just 167, down from 6,160 in figures published earlier this year.

Darren Millar said:

“Having lived in Towyn during the devastating floods there in 1990, I know just how awful a flood event can be, so this is fantastic news for local residents.

“The changes should have an impact on insurance premiums and give thousands of my residents and local businesses reduced bills.

“I would like to thank the Environment Agency for reviewing their flood risk registers and their continued work to improve flood defences and increase flood awareness across Conwy and Denbighshire.”
