A Vale of Clwyd school is preparing to celebrate a special milestone in its history.
On Saturday, 7 July, Ysgol Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd will celebrate providing education for primary aged children over the last century and a half.
The plans are for the celebration day to open with a short service at nearby St Mary’s Church at 1pm, followed by an afternoon of activities at the school, including the broadcast of a video that has been created to record ex-pupils’ memories of their school days.
Also on display will be specially commissioned artwork created by local artist, Ann Bridges, in co-operation with the children. The children will also perform a ‘world premier’ of a new song written specially for the school by Robat Arwyn and Dafydd Jones.
Llinos Hughes, headteacher, said: “It is interesting to note that on the incised stone plaque on the main façade it states “Llanfair National School was erected in 1861 and enlarged in 1895”. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the inscription is wholly in English – how things have changed since those days. The school is now proud to be one of only four bilingual primary schools in the county”.
“We hope that many with connections, memories or just simple curiosity about Ysgol Llanfair, will join us to take a trip down memory lane and make this special birthday one to remember.”
